How each alternative compares
Avolusion PRO-T8 14TB External Desktop Hard Drive
The Avolusion PRO-T8 14TB replaces the Apricorn’s 500GB capacity with 14TB of desktop storage. You give up the compact 4-ounce size and the integrated keypad for a 2-pound unit that sits on your desk. It uses USB 3.0 and fits Windows systems. This drive suits users who need massive local storage expansion rather than portable, encrypted security. The Apricorn keeps its edge for on-the-go physical access control, while this option provides sheer volume for stationary workloads.
Avolusion 4TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive
The Avolusion 4TB USB 3.0 Drive offers 4TB of space, which is eight times the Apricorn’s 500GB limit. It is a white, desktop-sized unit weighing 3 pounds, compared to the Apricorn’s small, black, portable form. It supports Mac and PC systems without requiring encryption software. You trade the Apricorn’s keypad security and rugged water resistance for simple, high-capacity backup storage. This alternative is better for users who prioritize large file storage and cross-platform compatibility over hardware-level access controls.
Western Digital My Book 14TB External Desktop Drive
The Western Digital My Book 14TB provides 14TB of desktop storage, far exceeding the Apricorn’s 500GB. It is a black, stationary drive measuring 1.9 inches thick and weighing significantly more than the Apricorn’s 4 ounces. It lacks hardware encryption and a keypad, focusing on raw capacity for desk setups. You choose this if you need large, unencrypted storage for a fixed location. The Apricorn remains the choice for users requiring physical access controls and portable, encrypted data protection rather than bulk desktop storage.
Silicon Power 2TB Armor A80 Rugged Hard Drive
The Silicon Power Armor A80 2TB offers 2TB of capacity, four times the Apricorn’s 500GB. It is a rugged, portable drive weighing 9.52 ounces, slightly heavier than the Apricorn’s 4 ounces. It uses USB 3.0 and features a 2.5-inch form factor. You gain more storage and durability but lose the Apricorn’s dedicated hardware encryption and keypad access. This drive suits users who want portable, rugged storage for harsh environments without the need for complex encryption management or multiple user access levels.
Silicon Power A80 1TB Rugged External Drive
The Silicon Power A80 1TB provides 1TB of storage, double the Apricorn’s 500GB. It is a blue, portable drive weighing 10.3 ounces, heavier than the Apricorn. It supports PC, Mac, PS4, and Xbox, offering broad compatibility. You gain console support and more space but lose the Apricorn’s hardware encryption and keypad security. This alternative is ideal for gamers or users needing durable, portable storage for multiple devices, rather than those requiring strict, hardware-based access control for sensitive data.
Apricorn 2TB Aegis Padlock DT Encrypted Drive
The Apricorn 2TB Aegis Padlock DT offers 2TB of capacity, four times the original’s 500GB. It is a desktop-sized drive weighing 2.5 pounds, much larger than the portable 500GB model. It retains USB 3.0 and dedicated hardware encryption. You gain more storage and maintain Apricorn’s security features but lose portability. This version suits users who need high-capacity, secure storage for a fixed location. The original 500GB model remains better for users who prioritize compact, portable security with physical keypad access.
