Apricorn NVX vs Padlock DT Specs
Storage capacity
The Apricorn 18TB Aegis Padlock DT offers 18TB of storage. This large capacity suits users who need to archive massive datasets or manage extensive media libraries. In contrast, the Apricorn Aegis NVX 1TB Encrypted SSD provides 1TB of space. While sufficient for many professional workflows, it holds significantly less data than the Padlock DT. If your primary concern is maximizing the amount of encrypted data you can store on a single drive, the 18TB model is the clear choice. The 1TB option is better for portability and smaller file sets.
Hardware interface
Connectivity differs between the two drives. The Apricorn Aegis NVX 1TB uses a USB Type C interface. This modern connector supports higher data transfer rates and is reversible for easier use. The Apricorn 18TB Aegis Padlock DT relies on USB 3.0. While reliable, USB 3.0 typically offers lower bandwidth than the 10Gbps speeds associated with the NVX drive. If you connect your drives to newer computers with USB-C ports, the NVX drive will likely provide faster file transfers. The Padlock DT requires a USB 3.0 port, which may need an adapter for some modern systems.
Form factor
Physical dimensions vary greatly. The Apricorn Aegis NVX 1TB is compact, measuring 4.72 inches in length, 2.4 inches in width, and 0.59 inches in height. Its small size makes it easy to carry in a bag or pocket. The Apricorn 18TB Aegis Padlock DT is much larger, measuring 7.2 inches in length, 4.5 inches in width, and 1.5 inches in height. Its bulkier design reflects its internal hard drive mechanism rather than a solid-state design. You should choose the NVX if portability is key. Choose the Padlock DT if the drive will remain stationary on a desk.
Security features
Both drives share robust security protocols. Each model features hardware encryption, separate Admin and User modes, and programmable brute-force defense. They also support data recovery PINs and are compatible with the Aegis Configurator software. The Apricorn Aegis NVX 1TB adds a Provision Lock with unattended auto-lock feature. This allows for automated locking when the drive is disconnected, which can be useful for unattended operations. The 18TB model does not list this specific auto-lock feature in its key specs. Both provide strong protection, but the NVX offers an extra layer of automation.
Technology type
The underlying technology defines performance and durability. The Apricorn Aegis NVX 1TB is an NVMe SSD. Solid-state drives have no moving parts, making them more resistant to physical shock and vibration. They also generally offer faster access times. The Apricorn 18TB Aegis Padlock DT is a hard drive. Hard drives contain spinning platters and moving read/write heads. While they offer high capacity at a lower cost per terabyte, they are more susceptible to damage from drops. If you need durability and speed, the NVX SSD is superior. If you need raw capacity for stationary storage, the hard drive is suitable.
Which Apricorn Drive Fits Your Needs
Users needing massive archival storage
The Apricorn 18TB Aegis Padlock DT provides 18TB of space for large datasets. It uses USB 3.0 for reliable connectivity. Its larger physical dimensions accommodate the internal hard drive mechanism. This model is ideal if you prioritize capacity over speed for long-term data retention.
Professionals requiring high-speed transfers
The Apricorn Aegis NVX 1TB uses an NVMe SSD with 10Gbps USB Type-C. This interface offers significantly faster data transfer rates than USB 3.0. The compact 2.4-inch width makes it portable. You get hardware encryption with separate admin and user PINs for secure, rapid access to your 1TB of data.
Teams needing centralized admin control
Both drives support Aegis Configurator and separate admin modes. The 18TB model suits teams managing vast amounts of shared data. It includes forced enrollment options for stricter access policies. The larger capacity allows more users to share the same encrypted volume without running out of space quickly.
