Looking Beyond the Avolusion PRO-T8 14TB External Desktop? 6 Alternatives Worth a Look

How each alternative compares

Western Digital My Book 14TB External Desktop Drive

The Western Digital My Book 14TB matches the Avolusion PRO-T8 in storage capacity but offers a different physical footprint. It measures 1.9 inches wide, making it slightly bulkier than the Avolusion unit. Both drives use USB 3.0 interfaces for desktop connectivity. You get similar raw storage space for backups or media libraries. However, the WD model lacks the specified 7200RPM rotational speed data found in the Avolusion specs. It prioritizes simplicity and brand recognition over high-speed enterprise internals. If you prefer a well-known brand for single-drive desktop backups, this is a solid choice. It does not offer encryption or hub features, keeping the focus on pure storage capacity.

Seagate Backup Plus Hub 4TB Desktop Hard Drive

The Seagate Backup Plus Hub 4TB differs significantly in capacity, offering only 4TB compared to the 14TB Avolusion drive. It includes a built-in USB hub, allowing you to connect additional peripherals directly to the drive. This adds convenience for users with limited USB ports on their desktop. The drive is compatible with both PC and Mac systems, unlike the Avolusion which is optimized for Windows. It is slightly heavier and taller than the Avolusion unit. You sacrifice substantial storage volume for added connectivity features. This model suits users who need to charge devices or connect flash drives without using extra ports. It is ideal for smaller data sets where hub functionality is more valuable than maximum capacity.

Western Digital 4TB My Book Desktop Hard Drive

The Western Digital 4TB My Book Desktop provides secure storage with hardware encryption, a feature absent in the Avolusion PRO-T8. It offers 4TB of space, which is less than the 14TB Avolusion drive. The WD model supports both PC and Mac compatibility, whereas the Avolusion is Windows-focused. It includes password protection and automatic backup software for data safety. The physical dimensions are similar to the Avolusion unit, fitting standard desktop spaces. You trade capacity for enhanced security features suitable for sensitive data. This drive is best for users who prioritize data protection and cross-platform use over large storage volumes. It serves as a reliable backup solution for documents and critical files requiring encryption.

LaCie 2big Dock 8TB External RAID Drive

The LaCie 2big Dock 8TB uses Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C interfaces, offering much higher speeds than the USB 3.0 Avolusion drive. It provides 8TB of storage, half the capacity of the Avolusion 14TB model. The drive includes built-in card slots for direct ingestion from cameras, benefiting video creators. It is compatible with both PC and Mac systems. The unit is heavier and larger than the Avolusion drive due to its dual-drive RAID enclosure. You gain professional-grade connectivity and workflow features at the cost of raw storage capacity. This model suits creative professionals who need fast data transfer and card slot access. It is less suitable for users who simply need bulk storage for archives or media libraries.

BUSlink CipherShield 14TB Encrypted External Drive

The BUSlink CipherShield 14TB matches the Avolusion PRO-T8 in storage capacity but adds hardware encryption via a physical key. It offers 14TB of space for users needing strict data security. The drive uses USB 3.0 for connectivity, similar to the Avolusion unit. It is larger and heavier than the Avolusion drive, measuring 8.25 inches in length. The physical key encryption ensures data remains secure even if the drive is stolen. You gain enhanced security features without sacrificing storage volume. This model is ideal for regulated environments or users handling sensitive corporate data. It is less convenient for casual users who prefer simple plug-and-play operation. The BUSlink drive prioritizes security protocols over the high-speed enterprise internals listed in the Avolusion specs.

LaCie Mobile Drive 2TB USB-C External HDD

The LaCie Mobile Drive 2TB is a portable drive, unlike the desktop-formatted Avolusion PRO-T8. It offers only 2TB of storage, significantly less than the 14TB Avolusion model. The drive uses USB-C connectivity, which is more modern than the USB 3.0 interface on the Avolusion. It is compatible with both PC and Mac systems, providing cross-platform flexibility. The unit is much smaller and lighter, weighing only 7.05 ounces. You sacrifice capacity and desktop convenience for portability and compact design. This model suits travelers or users who need to carry backups between locations. It is not suitable for users who require large-scale stationary storage or high-speed desktop performance. The LaCie drive prioritizes mobility over the bulk storage capabilities of the Avolusion unit.
