How alternatives compare to the PRO2
HGST Ultrastar He10 10TB Enterprise Hard Drive
The HGST Ultrastar He10 shifts from portable security to internal performance. It offers 10TB of capacity via a SATA interface, far exceeding the PRO2's 500GB limit. You gain 7200 RPM rotational speed and a 256MB cache, which delivers faster data throughput for NAS environments. However, you lose the USB 3.2 connectivity and FIPS Level 3 hardware encryption. This drive lacks a rugged, portable form factor and relies on software-level security. It suits users who prioritize raw speed and bulk storage over physical durability and certified encryption. Choose this if your data resides in a stationary NAS rather than a portable device.
MDD 8TB NAS Hard Drive
The MDD 8TB NAS Hard Drive provides substantial storage capacity at a budget-friendly price point. It features 7200 RPM speed and a 256MB cache, ensuring efficient performance for desktop NAS enclosures. The SATA interface connects directly to your system, differing from the PRO2's USB 3.2 port. You gain 16 times the storage capacity, but you sacrifice portability and hardware encryption. This drive is designed for internal use within a NAS chassis. It is ideal for users who handle large datasets and prefer software-based security solutions. Select this option if you need high-capacity, reliable storage for a fixed location rather than a secure, on-the-go drive.
HGST Ultrastar He8 8TB 7200 RPM Hard Drive
The HGST Ultrastar He8 8TB Enterprise Hard Drive targets continuous operation in server and RAID arrays. It delivers 8TB of storage with 7200 RPM speed and a 128MB cache. The SATA interface connects internally, removing the portable USB feature of the PRO2. You lose the rugged, IP56-rated casing and FIPS Level 3 certification. This drive is built for 24/7 uptime in enterprise environments. It offers massive bulk capacity for users who do not need physical security features. Choose this alternative if you are building a high-capacity NAS system and value reliability and speed over portable encryption and durability.
Seagate Exos 8TB Enterprise SATA HDD
The Seagate Exos 8TB Enterprise SATA HDD is designed for custom NAS builds requiring high capacity. It offers 8TB of storage with 7200 RPM speed and a 256MB cache. The SATA interface replaces the PRO2's USB 3.2 port, making it an internal drive. You gain significant storage volume and enterprise-grade durability, but you lose portability and hardware encryption. This drive suits users who value speed and reliability for fixed storage systems. It is not designed for travel or physical security. Select this option if you need robust, high-capacity storage for a stationary NAS setup rather than a secure, portable solution.
Western Digital 8TB WD Blue Hard Drive
The Western Digital 8TB WD Blue Hard Drive focuses on quiet operation and high capacity for home servers. It provides 8TB of storage with a 128MB cache and a SATA interface. Unlike the PRO2, it lacks USB connectivity and hardware encryption. This drive is optimized for PC compatibility and low noise levels. You trade the rugged, portable design and FIPS certification for silent, bulk storage. It is ideal for users who prioritize storage volume and quiet performance over security features. Choose this alternative if you are building a home server or desktop NAS where noise and capacity matter more than portable encryption.
Apricorn 2TB Aegis Padlock DT Encrypted Drive
The Apricorn 2TB Aegis Padlock DT Encrypted Drive offers dedicated physical security for sensitive data. It provides 2TB of storage via a USB 3.0 interface, similar to the PRO2's portability. However, it lacks the FIPS Level 3 certification and IP56 rugged rating of the PRO2. The drive focuses on admin controls and secure access for small data sets. You gain a larger capacity than the 500GB PRO2, but with different security protocols. This drive suits professionals handling sensitive files who need dedicated admin controls. Select this option if you require portable encryption with a focus on administrative oversight rather than rugged durability or government certification.
