Storage, Portability, and Connectivity
Storage Capacity
The LaCie Rugged Mini offers 4TB of storage space, which is double the capacity of the LaCie 2big Triple. The 2big model provides 2TB of total storage across its two internal bays. For users who need to store large video libraries or extensive photo collections, the Rugged Mini provides more room for data. The 2big Triple is limited to 2TB even with its dual-drive setup in this specific configuration. If your primary concern is having the maximum amount of space for files, the Rugged Mini is the superior choice. The 2big Triple is better suited for users who prioritize RAID features over raw capacity.
Form Factor
The two drives differ significantly in physical design. The LaCie 2big Triple is a desktop unit measuring 7.8 inches in length, 6.7 inches in width, and 3.5 inches in height. It weighs 5.73 pounds and requires a dedicated spot on your desk. In contrast, the Rugged Mini is a portable 2.5-inch drive. It measures 5.32 inches in length, 3.39 inches in width, and 1.02 inches in height. It weighs only 11.6 ounces, making it easy to carry in a bag. The Rugged Mini is designed for mobility, while the 2big Triple is built for stationary use.
Hardware Interface
Connectivity options vary between the two models. The LaCie 2big Triple supports FireWire 800, FireWire 400, and Hi-Speed USB 2.0. This multi-interface approach allows connection to older Mac systems via FireWire or modern PCs via USB. The Rugged Mini uses a standard USB connection, though specific port types like USB-C are not listed in the provided data. The 2big Triple offers more legacy compatibility with FireWire. However, the Rugged Mini likely supports faster modern USB standards not explicitly detailed here. If you rely on FireWire for older equipment, the 2big Triple is the better option.
Build and Durability
The LaCie Rugged Mini features a rugged design built to withstand drops, pressure, and rain. It is ideal for demanding environments and outdoor use. The LaCie 2big Triple has a heat sink metal design for natural cooling and includes a locking mechanism for its two removable SATA drives. It is made of aluminum but is not described as drop-proof or weather-resistant. The Rugged Mini is clearly superior for portability and physical protection. The 2big Triple focuses on thermal management and secure drive installation rather than ruggedness. Choose the Rugged Mini if you travel often.
Compatibility
The LaCie Rugged Mini works seamlessly with PC, Mac, iPad, and iPhone. This wide compatibility makes it versatile for use with various devices, including mobile ones. The LaCie 2big Triple is not explicitly listed as compatible with mobile devices like iPads. It is designed primarily for desktop computers. The Rugged Mini’s ability to connect to mobile devices gives it an edge in versatility. The 2big Triple is best for desktop setups. If you need to transfer files directly to an iPhone or iPad, the Rugged Mini is the only viable option.
