How alternatives compare to G-Drive
LaCie Rugged 5TB Thunderbolt Portable HDD
The LaCie Rugged 5TB Thunderbolt Portable HDD shares the 5TB capacity and rugged design ethos of the SanDisk drive. It differs by offering Thunderbolt connectivity alongside USB 3.0 and USB-C. This interface supports higher bandwidth than the SanDisk’s USB 3.2 Gen 1 port. The LaCie is slightly heavier at 1.32 pounds compared to the SanDisk’s 12.3 ounces. Its dimensions are also larger, making it less pocket-friendly. You should choose this if you need faster data transfer speeds for video work and already have Thunderbolt ports on your computer. It sacrifices minimal portability for improved connectivity options.
Seagate LaCie 2big Dock 8TB Desktop Array
The Seagate LaCie 2big Dock 8TB Desktop Array is a desktop solution, not a portable drive. It offers 8TB of storage, which is double the capacity of the SanDisk 5TB drive. This unit uses Thunderbolt and USB-C interfaces for high-speed data ingestion. It is significantly larger and heavier, weighing 6.39 pounds. You cannot carry this drive in a bag. It is designed for a fixed workstation. Choose this alternative if you need more storage space and faster sustained speeds for editing large media files. It gives up portability entirely to provide desktop-class performance and security for stationary workflows.
LaCie d2 Professional 10TB Desktop HDD
The LaCie d2 Professional 10TB Desktop HDD provides double the storage capacity of the SanDisk drive at 10TB. It features a 7200 RPM rotational speed, which typically offers faster read and write performance than standard 5400 RPM portable drives. It connects via USB 3.0 and USB-C. Like the 2big Dock, this is a desktop unit weighing 1.82 kilograms. It is not designed for travel. You should pick this drive if you need maximum capacity and speed for a fixed editing suite. It sacrifices portability and compact size to deliver higher performance and larger storage for professional desktop use.
WD 4TB My Passport Ultra Portable HDD
The WD 4TB My Passport Ultra Portable HDD offers a smaller 4TB capacity compared to the SanDisk 5TB model. It uses a USB-C interface for connectivity. This drive is lighter and more compact, weighing 8.16 ounces with a slim profile. It is optimized for Windows users, whereas the SanDisk drive works natively with macOS. Choose this if you prefer a lighter, more compact drive for Windows systems and do not need the extra 1TB of space. It gives up some capacity and macOS compatibility for a smaller form factor and potentially lower weight.
LaCie Mobile Drive 2TB USB-C External HDD
The LaCie Mobile Drive 2TB USB-C External HDD has half the storage capacity of the SanDisk drive at 2TB. It features a USB-C interface and works with both PC and Mac systems. This drive is extremely lightweight at 7.05 ounces and has a slim profile. It is designed for users who prioritize portability over high storage capacity. You should choose this if you need a lightweight backup drive for travel and have less data to store. It sacrifices significant storage space and rugged protection for a minimal footprint and easy transport.
