What stands out
- 4 TB storage capacity for large file archives
- 2.5-inch form factor suitable for specific enclosures
- 15mm thickness prevents use in most laptops
- 6.35 ounces lightweight design for portable setups
Who it fits
Good fit for
This drive suits users who need high capacity in a compact 2.5-inch form factor for desktop NAS systems or external enclosures. It is ideal for archiving media libraries or backing up significant data volumes. The 4 TB capacity provides ample space for documents and photos. However, you must ensure your target device can accommodate a 15mm thick drive. This unit is not for slim laptops or devices with strict height limitations. Verify your chassis clearance before buying.
Who should skip it
You should skip this drive if you plan to install it in a standard laptop. The 15mm thickness exceeds the clearance of most notebook bays, which typically accept 7mm drives. It will not fit in slim ultrabooks or older laptop models. Additionally, if you need a drive with a display or advanced connectivity features not listed here, this basic internal HDD may not meet your expectations. Check your device's specific height requirements first to avoid compatibility issues.
Verdict: The Seagate BarraCuda ST4000LM024 offers 4 TB of storage in a 2.5-inch package. Its 15mm thickness limits it to desktop or external enclosure use, not most laptops.
Key specs for this drive
Form Factor: 2.5"
This drive uses the standard 2.5-inch size found in most laptops. It fits into laptop bays and external enclosures designed for portable storage. You cannot install it in a desktop tower, which requires a larger 3.5-inch drive. This compact shape makes it ideal for mobile setups or slim external storage solutions where space is tight.
Storage Capacity: 4 TB
The drive holds 4 terabytes of data. This allows you to store thousands of high-resolution photos, hours of 4K video, or large game libraries. For NAS users, this offers a moderate amount of space. It is suitable for personal media archives or small office backups, but you may need more drives for heavy enterprise workloads.
Thickness: 15mm
The drive is 15 millimeters thick. This measurement is crucial for compatibility. Most modern laptops have slots that only accept 7mm drives. This thickness means the drive will not fit inside most laptops. You should check your device specifications carefully before purchasing to ensure the physical space can accommodate this thicker profile.
Model: ST4000LM024
This specific model number identifies the exact drive variant. It helps you find the correct drivers, firmware updates, and compatibility lists on the manufacturer website. When comparing options, use this code to ensure you are looking at the exact same hardware. It distinguishes this 4TB version from other capacities in the BarraCuda lineup.
Physical dimensions and build
The Seagate BarraCuda ST4000LM024 measures 3.94 inches wide, 2.72 inches long, and 0.59 inches high. It weighs 6.35 ounces. The listing notes a thickness of 15mm. This specific dimension is critical for your installation plans. Most laptop bays accommodate drives up to 9.5mm thick. A 15mm drive will not fit inside standard laptop chassis. You must verify your device’s maximum drive height before purchasing. This constraint limits the drive to desktop enclosures or specific external storage boxes that support thicker units.
The drive uses a standard 2.5-inch form factor. This size is common for portable storage solutions. You can place it in external hard drive enclosures designed for 2.5-inch drives. The compact footprint allows for easy integration into small form factor desktop cases. The weight of 6.35 ounces provides a stable base for stationary use. It does not require additional mounting hardware beyond standard screws.
According to the listing, the drive features a green color scheme. This is typical for the BarraCuda product line. The design prioritizes functionality over aesthetic customization. There are no visible buttons or displays on the unit. You rely on your computer’s operating system to manage the drive. The simple layout ensures compatibility with a wide range of internal and external connections.
Setup and everyday use
The Seagate BarraCuda ST4000LM024 is designed for internal installation. You must verify your host device supports a 2.5-inch form factor. This size is standard for laptops and many external enclosures. The drive measures 3.94 inches wide and 0.59 inches high. These dimensions allow it to fit into standard bays. However, the listing highlights a 15mm thickness. This specific measurement is critical. Most modern laptops accommodate drives up to 7mm or 9.5mm. A 15mm drive will not fit most laptop compartments. You should check the exact clearance in your chassis before purchasing. This drive is better suited for desktops, NAS units, or thick external enclosures that can handle the extra height.
Once installed, the 4 TB capacity provides ample space for large files. You can store high-resolution videos, extensive photo libraries, or system backups. The internal nature means you connect it via standard SATA interfaces. This ensures compatibility with most motherboards and controllers. The 6.35-ounce weight is manageable for internal mounting. You will need to secure it with screws in the designated slots. The green color is cosmetic and does not affect performance. Daily use involves reading and writing data through your operating system. The 4 TB limit means you should manage your files carefully. It is ideal for users who need significant local storage without cloud dependency. Ensure your device has the physical space and the correct interface before setup.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Seagate BarraCuda ST4000LM024 suitable for laptop use?
This drive is not recommended for most laptops. It has a thickness of 0.59 inches, which equals 15mm. Most standard laptop bays only accept drives that are 9.5mm thick or less. You should only use this drive in desktops or custom external enclosures that can accommodate the extra height. Check your device specifications carefully before installation.
What are the exact dimensions of the Seagate BarraCuda 4TB drive?
The drive measures 3.94 inches in width and 2.72 inches in length. The height is 0.59 inches. It weighs 6.35 ounces. These physical specifications are critical if you are fitting the drive into a specific enclosure or mounting bracket. The 2.5-inch form factor is standard, but the 15mm thickness is the main constraint for your setup.
Can I use this drive in an external hard drive enclosure?
Yes, you can use this drive in many external enclosures. The product data lists it as best for desktop storage or custom enclosures. However, you must ensure the enclosure supports the 15mm thickness. Standard slim laptop enclosures will not fit this drive. Look for enclosures explicitly designed for thicker 2.5-inch drives or desktop-style portable cases.
What is the model number for the Seagate BarraCuda 4TB drive?
The model number is ST4000LM024. This identifier helps you verify you are purchasing the correct 4TB capacity drive. It is part of the BarraCuda line, which typically features green branding. Using the exact model number ensures compatibility with your system documentation and helps you find accurate technical support resources from the manufacturer.
Is the Seagate BarraCuda ST4000LM024 a solid state drive?
No, this is a traditional hard disk drive (HDD). The product title and description identify it as a hard drive. It uses spinning magnetic platters for storage rather than flash memory. This means it has moving parts and relies on the standard 2.5-inch form factor. It is designed for high-capacity storage rather than the speed of an SSD.
Does the Seagate BarraCuda 4TB drive come with a color?
The drive is listed with a green color. This is typical for the BarraCuda series branding. The color is primarily aesthetic and does not affect performance. You will likely see green labeling on the drive casing. This visual cue helps distinguish it from other Seagate lines like the IronWolf or SkyHawk series, which use different color schemes.
