Comparing key specs and trade-offs
LaCie 2big RAID 16TB Desktop Hard Drive
The LaCie 2big RAID 16TB uses the same 7200 RPM enterprise drives and USB-C interface as the 48TB model. You get identical rotational speed and desktop form factor for consistent performance. The main difference is capacity. This unit offers 16TB instead of 48TB, which reduces total storage significantly. It also weighs slightly less at 4.65 pounds. You should choose this if you need RAID 1 redundancy for data safety rather than raw space. It suits professionals managing large media libraries who prioritize protection over massive capacity. The interface remains compatible with both PC and Mac systems.
LaCie 2big Dock 8TB External RAID Drive
The LaCie 2big Dock 8TB differs by including Thunderbolt 3 connectivity alongside USB-C and USB 3.0. This interface option can offer faster data transfer speeds for compatible devices. However, you sacrifice capacity, receiving only 8TB compared to the 48TB original. It retains the desktop form factor and enterprise drive reliability. This model is designed for creators who need direct card slot ingestion for fast workflow ingestion. You should pick this if you value direct card slots and high-speed connectivity over the massive storage of the 48TB drive. It works with both PC and Mac computers for professional media production tasks.
LaCie Mobile Drive 2TB USB-C External HDD
The LaCie Mobile Drive 2TB Portable HDD is a compact, portable solution rather than a desktop unit. You give up the 48TB capacity and 7200 RPM speed for portability. It weighs only 7.05 ounces and connects via USB-C and USB 3.0. This drive suits users who prioritize carrying data between devices over stationary high-capacity storage. It lacks RAID redundancy and enterprise-class drives. You should choose this if you need a practical backup solution for travel or small file sets. It maintains compatibility with both PC and Mac systems, making it a flexible choice for photographers and travelers who do not need massive desktop storage.
LaCie Mobile Drive 5TB Portable HDD
The LaCie Mobile Drive 5TB Portable HDD offers a middle ground in size but still lacks the capacity of the 48TB desktop drive. You receive 5TB of storage via USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 interfaces. It is significantly lighter at 10.6 ounces, fitting in a bag easily. This drive does not include RAID redundancy or 7200 RPM enterprise drives. You should pick this if you value Thunderbolt 3 speed and aluminum durability for portable use. It is ideal for photographers and travelers who need to carry data between Mac and PC devices. It sacrifices the raw capacity and stationary reliability of the 2big RAID for mobility and cross-platform compatibility.
Seagate One Touch Hub 8TB External Hard Drive
The Seagate One Touch Hub 8TB Desktop HDD provides 8TB of storage, which is much less than the 48TB original. It uses USB-C and USB 3.0 interfaces and maintains the desktop form factor. This drive includes USB charging ports and basic backup software, features the LaCie 2big RAID lacks. You should choose this if you need convenient charging and simple backup tools rather than high-capacity RAID storage. It is a practical choice for users who do not require enterprise-class drive reliability or massive space. It works with both PC and Mac systems, offering a simpler experience for general desktop storage needs without the complexity of RAID configuration.
YOTUO 320GB Portable External Hard Drive
The YOTUO 320GB Portable External Hard Drive is a small, portable unit with only 320GB of storage. You give up the 48TB capacity, 7200 RPM speed, and desktop form factor entirely. It connects via USB-C and USB 3.0 and weighs 8.82 ounces. This drive is designed for console game storage or small portable backups. You should pick this if you need tiny storage for PS4, Xbox, or laptops. It is not suitable for media professionals or users needing high capacity. It offers basic compatibility with PC, Mac, and gaming consoles, serving a niche market far removed from the high-performance desktop RAID requirements of the LaCie 2big RAID 48TB.
