6 Best Alternatives to the Seagate Skyhawk ST4000VX016 Internal Hard (2026)

How each alternative compares

Western Digital AV-GP 1TB 3.5-Inch Hard Drive

The Western Digital AV-GP offers only 1 TB of storage, which is significantly less than the 4000 GB capacity of the Skyhawk. This drive targets single-camera setups or small personal storage where space is not a primary concern. It shares the 3.5-inch form factor and SATA interface, ensuring compatibility with standard enclosures. However, the reduced capacity makes it unsuitable for multi-camera arrays that require long retention periods. The 64 MB cache matches some enterprise drives but is modest for heavy workloads. You should choose this option if you need a budget-friendly entry-level drive for minimal surveillance needs rather than high-capacity recording.

Toshiba 14TB Enterprise 7200 RPM HDD (Renewed)

This Toshiba drive provides 14 TB of storage, far exceeding the 4000 GB capacity of the Skyhawk. It features a 7200 RPM rotational speed and a 256 MB cache, which are higher than typical surveillance drives. These specs deliver faster data access and better performance for demanding NAS environments. The drive is designed for enterprise use, prioritizing density and speed over the specialized vibration resistance of the Skyhawk. It fits users who need maximum storage in a single bay. If your priority is high capacity and performance for business-critical NAS systems, this renewed unit offers substantial advantages in speed and density.

Western Digital RE 4TB 7200 RPM Hard Drive

The Western Digital RE drive matches the Skyhawk at 4 TB capacity but differs in performance characteristics. It operates at 7200 RPM with a 64 MB cache, offering faster rotational speeds than many surveillance-specific drives. This makes it suitable for business-critical 24/7 applications where reliability and speed are paramount. The drive shares the 3.5-inch form factor and SATA interface, ensuring easy integration. However, it lacks the specialized firmware optimizations for video surveillance found in the Skyhawk. You should select this option if you require robust performance for general enterprise storage rather than dedicated camera recording, prioritizing speed and endurance for critical business data.

Seagate Exos 7E8 6TB Enterprise Drive

The Seagate Exos 7E8 provides 6 TB of storage, which is 50% more than the 4000 GB capacity of the Skyhawk. It features a 256 MB cache and a SATA interface, supporting heavy workloads in business NAS systems. This drive is built for high reliability and endurance, making it ideal for users running resource-intensive applications. While it shares the 3.5-inch form factor, it lacks the specific vibration management features of the Skyhawk. You should choose this option if you need increased capacity and robust performance for business-centric NAS systems. It offers a balance of higher storage and enterprise-grade durability for demanding environments.

Seagate Exos X14 14TB Renewed Enterprise HDD

The Seagate Exos X14 offers 14 TB of storage, significantly more than the 4000 GB capacity of the Skyhawk. It operates at 7200 RPM with a SATA interface, providing high speed and capacity for demanding storage needs. This renewed enterprise drive prioritizes performance and density over brand-new status. It shares the 3.5-inch form factor, ensuring compatibility with standard drive bays. The drive is suitable for users who need maximum storage space and fast data access. If you prioritize speed and capacity over having a new drive, this option delivers substantial advantages. It is ideal for high-capacity storage needs where performance is critical.

MFerraz 6TB Enterprise 7200 RPM Hard Drive

The MFerraz drive provides 6 TB of storage, which is 50% more than the 4000 GB capacity of the Skyhawk. It features a 7200 RPM rotational speed and a 256 MB cache, offering faster data access and better performance for enterprise environments. The drive shares the 3.5-inch form factor and SATA interface, ensuring easy integration. It is designed for high-capacity enterprise and NAS storage, prioritizing capacity and speed. You should choose this option if you need robust performance for demanding storage tasks in a server or NAS environment. It offers a balance of higher storage and enterprise-grade durability for users requiring high performance.
