Our top pick: Western Digital WD Purple Pro 8TB CMR HDD.
How alternatives compare to WD Purple Pro
Seagate Exos 26TB CMR Hard Drive
The Seagate Exos 26TB CMR Hard Drive offers significantly more storage capacity than the WD Purple Pro. It provides 26TB of space compared to the 8TB model. This drive also features a larger 512MB cache, which is double the cache size of the Purple Pro. Both drives operate at 7200 RPM and use CMR technology. The Exos is designed for maximum capacity and sustained performance in heavy workloads. You should choose this alternative if you need to store more video footage without adding more drives. It suits professionals managing large-scale data storage needs where capacity is the primary constraint. The increased cache may help with smoother data processing for many simultaneous camera streams.
Seagate Recertified Exos X18 16TB CMR HDD
The Seagate Recertified Exos X18 16TB CMR HDD provides double the storage capacity of the WD Purple Pro. It holds 16TB compared to the 8TB model. Like the Purple Pro, it operates at 7200 RPM and uses CMR recording technology. This drive is suited for high-capacity hyperscale storage needs. It is a solid option for dense data architectures where you need more space in the same form factor. The recertified status may affect warranty terms, but it offers strong performance for surveillance or NAS use. If you prioritize capacity over brand-new condition, this is a viable alternative. It maintains the high rotational speed needed for consistent video recording across multiple cameras.
Western Digital 18TB WD Red Pro
The Western Digital 18TB WD Red Pro offers more than double the storage capacity of the WD Purple Pro. It provides 18TB of space. It matches the Purple Pro with 7200 RPM rotational speed and a 256MB cache. Both drives use CMR technology and SATA interfaces. The WD Red Pro is designed for high-capacity NAS storage needs. It is ideal for heavy data workloads where you need both speed and large storage volume. If you are using a NAS for surveillance and need more space, this is a strong choice. It keeps the same cache size as the Purple Pro but delivers much higher capacity. This suits users who prioritize speed and capacity for their NAS environment.
Seagate 20TB IronWolf Pro Recertified
The Seagate 20TB IronWolf Pro Recertified provides significantly more storage than the WD Purple Pro. It holds 20TB compared to the 8TB model. It matches the Purple Pro with 7200 RPM speed, 256MB cache, and CMR technology. This drive is built for high-capacity NAS storage with CMR reliability. It suits those prioritizing capacity and vibration control over a standard new-drive warranty. If you need more space for your surveillance system, this alternative offers robust performance. The recertified nature may impact warranty coverage, but it delivers strong specs for heavy NAS users. It maintains the high rotational speed and cache size needed for demanding multi-camera setups.
Toshiba X300 5TB 7200 RPM CMR Hard Drive
The Toshiba X300 5TB 7200 RPM CMR Hard Drive has less storage capacity than the WD Purple Pro. It holds 5TB compared to the 8TB model. However, it matches the Purple Pro with 7200 RPM speed and CMR technology. The X300 features a smaller 128MB cache, which is half the size of the Purple Pro. This drive is best for high-performance gaming desktops or users who prioritize speed over massive capacity. It lacks the high capacity and long warranty of enterprise NAS drives. You should pick this alternative only if you need a smaller drive for non-surveillance tasks. It delivers strong performance for gaming libraries but is less suited for heavy surveillance workloads.
Western Digital 2TB WD Red Pro NAS HDD
The Western Digital 2TB WD Red Pro NAS HDD offers much less storage than the WD Purple Pro. It holds 2TB compared to the 8TB model. It matches the Purple Pro with 7200 RPM speed and CMR technology. However, it has a smaller 64MB cache, which is a quarter of the Purple Pro's cache. This drive is best for small NAS setups needing high speed. It suits users who prioritize speed over capacity in compact RAID configurations. If you need a small drive for non-surveillance NAS use, this is an option. It lacks the capacity and cache of the Purple Pro, making it less ideal for multi-camera surveillance systems.
