Looking Beyond the Apricorn Aegis Padlock DT FIPS? 6 Alternatives Worth a Look

How these alternatives differ from the Apricorn

Avolusion PRO-T8 14TB External Desktop Hard Drive

The Avolusion PRO-T8 14TB drive offers less storage than the Apricorn but targets desktop Windows users specifically. It lacks the Apricorn’s hardware encryption and FIPS compliance. You get a lighter unit at 2 pounds versus 3.55 pounds. The dimensions are smaller, making it easier to place on a desk. It connects via USB 3.0, matching the original interface. This model is not suitable for Mac users or portable use. If you do not need encryption and want a lighter, cheaper desktop drive for Windows backups, this is a practical choice. You sacrifice security features for reduced weight and cost.

Avolusion 4TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive

The Avolusion 4TB USB 3.0 Drive provides significantly less capacity than the 24TB Apricorn model. It is designed for basic cross-platform backups on Mac and PC systems. The drive is white and weighs 3 pounds, similar to the Apricorn’s weight. It lacks the heavy-duty hardware encryption found in the Apricorn Aegis. This makes it a simpler option for users who prioritize compatibility over security. It is not rugged or encrypted. If you need a small, simple drive for everyday backups on multiple operating systems, this fits. You give up massive storage and military-grade encryption for simplicity and broader OS support.

Western Digital My Book 14TB External Desktop Drive

The Western Digital My Book 14TB Desktop Drive offers half the storage of the Apricorn but remains a high-capacity desktop solution. It lacks hardware encryption, relying on software for security. The drive is black and connects via USB 3.0. It is designed for stationary use, requiring a power outlet. It does not offer the FIPS compliance of the Apricorn model. This drive suits users who prioritize raw space and brand recognition over built-in hardware security. It is heavier and bulkier than portable options. If you need large stationary storage without the complexity of hardware encryption, this is a reliable alternative. You trade encryption for a well-known brand and lower price.

Silicon Power 2TB Armor A80 Rugged Hard Drive

The Silicon Power Armor A80 2TB Drive is a rugged, portable option, unlike the desktop-focused Apricorn. It offers far less storage, at 2TB versus 24TB. The drive is water-resistant and built for physical durability. It connects via USB 3.0 and is compact at 0.71 inches thick. It weighs just 9.52 ounces, making it highly portable. This model lacks hardware encryption and FIPS compliance. It is ideal for mobile users who need durability over capacity. If you travel frequently and need a tough drive for field work, this is suitable. You sacrifice massive storage and desktop convenience for ruggedness and portability.

Silicon Power A80 1TB Rugged External Drive

The Silicon Power A80 1TB Rugged Drive is even smaller and lighter than the Armor A80. It offers only 1TB of storage, much less than the Apricorn. It is designed for consoles and portable use. The drive is blue and weighs 10.3 ounces. It connects via USB 3.0 and supports PC, Mac, PS4, and Xbox. It lacks hardware encryption and desktop form factors. This model is for users who need basic, durable storage for gaming or travel. It is not suitable for large backups or professional desktop use. You give up capacity, encryption, and desktop convenience for extreme portability and console compatibility.

Apricorn 2TB Aegis Padlock DT Encrypted Drive

The Apricorn 2TB Aegis Padlock DT Drive shares the same brand and encryption technology as the 24TB model. It offers 2TB of storage, significantly less than the 24TB version. It features hardware encryption and admin controls. The drive is black and weighs 2.5 pounds, lighter than the 24TB model. It connects via USB 3.0. This model is for users who need security but do not require 24TB of space. It is a smaller, more affordable option within the same secure product line. You trade capacity for a lower weight and potentially lower cost. It is ideal for users who need FIPS compliance but have smaller data sets.
