Apricorn Aegis Padlock DT Key Specs
Storage Capacity: 24tb
This drive holds 24 terabytes of data. You can store large video files, extensive databases, or full system backups without needing multiple units. For users managing multi-user collaborations or daily backups, this capacity reduces the need for frequent external drive swaps. Compare this high limit with standard 2TB or 4TB desktop drives to see the storage density advantage for bulk archival needs.
Hardware Interface: USB 3.0
The drive connects via USB 3.0, offering standard high-speed data transfer for desktop environments. This interface ensures compatibility with most modern computers and laptops. While not the fastest available option like USB 3.2 Gen 2, it provides reliable performance for backup tasks. You should check if your system ports support this version to ensure optimal transfer speeds for large file movements.
Model: ADT-3PL256F-24TB
This specific model number identifies the 24TB version of the Aegis Padlock DT FIPS line. The ADT prefix indicates the desktop form factor, distinguishing it from portable versions. When shopping, use this exact identifier to ensure you get the correct capacity and encryption standard. Matching the model number prevents confusion with lower-capacity variants or different security certifications in the same product family.
Weight: 3.55 pounds
The drive weighs 3.55 pounds, reflecting its robust desktop construction and internal hardware. This weight suggests stability on a desk but makes it unsuitable for frequent travel. You should keep it in a fixed location for reliable access. Compare this mass with lighter portable drives to understand the trade-off between durability and mobility for your specific storage workflow.
Design and Build Quality
The Apricorn Aegis Padlock DT FIPS presents a sturdy, utilitarian form factor. According to the listing, the drive measures 7.2 by 4.5 by 1.5 inches. It weighs 3.55 pounds. This substantial weight suggests a dense internal construction designed to protect the drive mechanism during transport or daily use. The black finish provides a neutral look that blends into any office environment without drawing unnecessary attention.
Its desktop-oriented dimensions make it suitable for stationary setups. The 5-inch width and 2-inch height offer a stable base that resists tipping. You will likely place this unit on a desk or in a server rack area rather than carrying it in a bag. The USB 3.0 interface ensures fast data transfers for large 24TB workloads. This connectivity choice supports high-bandwidth tasks like video editing or database backups.
The hardware encryption is built directly into the device. You do not need to install software to secure your files. The 256-bit AES XTS standard operates at the hardware level. This design reduces CPU load on your computer. It also simplifies security management for multi-user teams. The physical build supports this focus on reliability and straightforward operation. You get a secure storage solution that prioritizes data integrity over flashy aesthetics.

This setup ensures your sensitive data remains protected while you work efficiently.
Before You Buy This Drive
Before purchasing this drive, verify your system supports USB 3.0 ports. The unit requires significant desk space due to its 7.2 by 4.5 by 1.5-inch footprint. You should ensure your workstation has adequate ventilation, as the dense 3.55-pound metal casing traps heat during long backup sessions. Since it lacks a display, you must rely on your computer’s interface for status checks. This model fits best as a secondary secure archive rather than a primary NAS volume. It complements faster internal drives by offloading large, infrequent backups. Keep the area around the vents clear. Regularly inspect the USB cable for wear, as frequent plugging and unplugging can loosen connections over time. This device suits users who prioritize physical security and high capacity over speed or portability. It is not ideal for mobile workflows or tight storage cabinets. Consider your daily data volume to confirm 24TB is sufficient for your needs.
Check before you buy
- Verify your computer has available USB 3.0 ports.
- Ensure your desk has enough space for the large footprint.
