Who it fits

Key specs explained for this drive

Storage Capacity 5TB

This drive holds five terabytes of data. You can store large video files, extensive photo libraries, or multiple system backups. Compare this capacity to standard 1TB or 2TB portable drives. If you need space for high-resolution media or bulk archival, five terabytes provides a significant buffer. It suits users who want to consolidate many files into one portable unit without worrying about running out of space quickly.

Hardware Interface USB

The drive connects via a standard USB port. This ensures compatibility with most computers, laptops, and even some TVs or media players. You do not need special adapters or proprietary cables. When shopping for NAS or portable drives, USB is the universal standard. It allows you to plug the drive into any device with a USB port for immediate data access or transfer without complex setup.

AES-XTS 256-bit hardware encryption

All data is encrypted directly on the drive hardware using a strong 256-bit standard. This means your files are scrambled and unreadable without the correct PIN. Unlike software encryption, this does not slow down your computer. It protects your data if the drive is lost or stolen. This level of security is essential for sensitive business records, personal financial data, or any information you need to keep private.

Read speeds Up to 171 MB/s

This drive can read data at speeds up to 171 megabytes per second. This allows for quick access to large files, such as high-definition videos or large database backups. Compare this to slower portable drives that may struggle with large file transfers. While not as fast as internal SSDs, this speed is practical for everyday portable storage tasks. It ensures you spend less time waiting for data to load on your screen.

Model IS-DA3-256-5000-GN

This specific model number identifies the exact configuration of this drive. It confirms you are getting the five terabyte, green, hard disk drive version. When comparing products, use the model number to ensure you match the exact specs. Variations often exist for different colors or storage sizes. Checking the model number prevents confusion and ensures you receive the precise hardware configuration you need for your security and storage requirements.

Physical Design and Build Quality

The listing describes the diskAshur3 HDD 5TB Green as a portable storage solution with a focus on durability. The enclosure is finished in an Emerald Green color, giving it a distinct visual identity compared to standard black drives. According to the listing, the drive measures 5.16 inches in length, 3.27 inches in width, and 0.82 inches in height. These dimensions make it compact enough to fit in a laptop bag or carry case without adding significant bulk. The 0.82-inch thickness is typical for portable HDDs, ensuring it remains flat and easy to stack or store.

The design prioritizes physical security through its control interface. It features a wear-resistant, backlit, alphanumeric keypad. This layout allows you to enter an 8–64-digit PIN directly on the device. The backlit keypad is useful for operation in low-light environments, such as dimly lit offices or travel settings. There is no external display or additional buttons mentioned in the specifications. The simplicity of the keypad reduces potential points of failure while maintaining the required security protocol.

The drive relies on a USB hardware interface for connectivity. This standard connection ensures compatibility with a wide range of devices, including desktops, laptops, and thin clients. The robust casing and keypad placement suggest it is built to withstand occasional drops or rough handling during transport. You should handle the keypad with care to preserve its wear-resistant finish. The overall build supports its role as a secure, on-the-go storage device for sensitive data.

Setup and daily operation guide

Setting up this drive requires no software installation. The listing confirms it is software-free and works on any device with a USB port. This includes MS Windows, macOS, Linux, iPadOS, Chrome, and Android systems. It also supports thin clients, zero clients, Citrix, VMware, DVRs, medical equipment, printers, and CCTV systems. You simply connect the drive via USB. The device uses an alphanumeric keypad for authentication. You must enter an eight to sixty-four-digit PIN to unlock the drive. Once authenticated, you can access your data normally. The drive handles encryption automatically. All data transferred to the drive is encrypted in real time. This process uses AES-XTS 256-bit hardware encryption. You do not need to manage encryption keys or settings. The drive includes an auto-lock feature. When you disconnect the device, all data is encrypted. This protects your information from unauthorized access if the drive is lost or stolen. The keypad is backlit and wear-resistant. This design supports frequent use in various lighting conditions. Transfer speeds are listed as up to 171 MB/s for reading and 148 MB/s for writing. These speeds allow for reasonable data movement. The drive helps ensure compliance with regulations like GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, and TAA. The firmware meets FIPS 140-3 Level 3 standards. This makes it suitable for environments with strict data protection requirements. You can use it for daily backups or secure file storage without complex configuration.

Before you buy this drive

You should verify that your USB ports support the required power delivery for this portable drive. The listing notes compatibility with thin clients, zero clients, and medical equipment, but you must confirm your specific hardware supports the USB interface. Keep the drive away from extreme moisture despite its dust and water resistance claims, as physical damage can compromise the keypad. Store the PIN securely; losing it may lock you out of your data. This drive fits well alongside other NAS Drives & Hard Drives options if you prioritize portability and strict hardware encryption over network-based access. It is not a direct replacement for a full NAS system but complements it for secure, mobile data transport. Regularly check the keypad backlight function to ensure it remains visible in low-light environments. Consider buying a protective case if you transport it frequently in bags with other hard drives.

Check before you buy

• Confirm your USB port provides sufficient power for the drive.
• Verify your device supports the required USB interface standards.
• Secure your 8–64 digit PIN in a safe location.
• Check if your workflow requires network access instead of portable use.
