Apricorn 2TB Aegis Padlock DT Alternatives: 6 Similar Picks Compared

How these alternatives compare

G-Technology G-RAID 4TB Dual External Drive

The G-Technology G-RAID offers 4 TB of storage, double the capacity of the Apricorn 2 TB model. It supports RAID 0 for faster data transfer speeds, which benefits video editors. This drive includes both FireWire and USB 3.0 ports, providing broader connectivity options for creative workstations. You gain significant speed and capacity, but you lose the hardware-level encryption and PIN keypad security found on the Apricorn. It lacks the brute-force defense features. If you need raw performance and multiple interface types for a Mac setup, this is a strong choice. However, it does not protect data with built-in hardware authentication, so you must rely on software encryption for security.

Apricorn 1TB Aegis Padlock Fortress Encrypted Drive

The Apricorn 1TB Aegis Padlock Fortress shares the same brand and security DNA as the original. It provides software-free, hardware-encrypted storage with a keypad for PIN authentication. The main difference is capacity; this model offers 1 TB, which is half the storage of the 2 TB Aegis Padlock DT. It is lighter and more compact, weighing only 4 ounces compared to the heavier desktop unit. This makes it easier to handle, though it remains a desktop drive. If you prioritize data protection over storage volume, this is a suitable alternative. It maintains the rugged build and admin enrollment features. You trade double the storage space for a smaller footprint and lower price point, assuming availability.

Silicon Power Armor A30 1TB Rugged Hard Drive

The Silicon Power Armor A30 focuses on physical durability rather than data encryption. It meets MIL-STD-810G shock resistance standards, making it highly resistant to drops and impacts. This drive is a 2.5-inch portable unit, significantly smaller and lighter than the desktop-sized Apricorn. It weighs just 6.38 ounces, offering true portability. You give up the 2 TB capacity and the hardware keypad security entirely. Instead, you gain a rugged, compact drive suitable for travel. It uses USB 3.0 for connectivity. If you need a drive that survives rough handling and fits in a bag, this is a better option. It is ideal for users who value physical protection over cryptographic security features.

Western Digital Elements 4TB Desktop External Hard Drive

The Western Digital Elements provides 4 TB of storage, which is twice the capacity of the Apricorn 2 TB drive. It is a standard desktop external hard drive with USB 3.0 connectivity. The design is simple and plug-and-play, requiring no special software or hardware authentication. You lose the hardware encryption and PIN keypad security completely. This drive is heavier than portable options but designed for stationary desktop use. It offers reliable, high-capacity storage for backups and file archiving. If you need maximum storage space for a low cost and do not require data encryption, this is a practical choice. It lacks the security features of the Apricorn, so it is best for non-sensitive data storage.

Seagate Backup Plus Portable 4TB External Drive

The Seagate Backup Plus Portable offers 4 TB of storage in a compact, portable form factor. It weighs 8.64 ounces, making it much lighter and smaller than the desktop Apricorn. It supports both PC and Mac systems with USB 3.0 connectivity. You gain double the storage capacity and easy portability, but you lose the hardware encryption and keypad security. This drive relies on software for backup management rather than built-in hardware protection. It is ideal for users who need to move large amounts of data between computers. If you prioritize capacity and mobility over data security, this is a solid alternative. It does not protect against physical theft of the drive itself.

Silicon Power 4TB Armor A60 Rugged External Drive

The Silicon Power 4TB Armor A60 is a rugged, portable drive with 4 TB of storage. It features a shock-resistant design suitable for harsh environments. It weighs 9.88 ounces and uses USB 3.0 connectivity. This drive is significantly lighter and more portable than the desktop Apricorn. You gain double the storage capacity and physical durability, but you lose the hardware encryption and PIN keypad. It is compatible with both PC and Mac systems. If you need a durable drive for field work or travel with high capacity, this is a strong option. It does not offer data-level security through hardware authentication. It is best for users who value physical toughness and storage volume over cryptographic protection.
