6 Best Alternatives to the Apricorn Aegis Fortress 8TB Encrypted (2026)

How each alternative compares

Apricorn 8TB Aegis Padlock Encrypted Portable SSD

The Apricorn Aegis Padlock shares the same 8TB capacity and external USB 3.0 interface as the Fortress. It uses the same hardware-based AES-XTS 256-bit encryption, so you get similar on-the-fly data protection without needing software installation. The key difference is the lack of FIPS 140-2 Level 2 validation in the Padlock’s specifications. You give up the strict government compliance certification, but you retain the rugged, portable form factor. This drive suits users who need secure, cross-platform storage on Windows and Mac but do not require the specific audit trail or validated encryption standards of the Fortress. It is a slightly less regulated option for general secure transport.

Seagate Exos 7E8 8TB Enterprise Hard Drive

The Seagate Exos 7E8 is an internal 3.5-inch enterprise hard drive, not an external SSD. It offers 8TB of storage via a SATA interface, which means you must install it inside a NAS or server chassis. You give up the built-in encryption, portability, and shock resistance of the Fortress. However, you gain enterprise-grade reliability features and a 256MB cache for consistent performance in multi-bay environments. This drive is for users who already have secure network storage infrastructure and need high-density, reliable storage for servers. It does not protect data at rest on its own, so you must rely on your NAS’s encryption features instead of the drive’s hardware.

WD_BLACK D10 8TB External Hard Drive

The WD_BLACK D10 is an external hard drive designed for gaming on PC and Xbox. It provides 8TB of storage via USB, offering portability similar to the Fortress. However, it uses spinning platters rather than solid-state components, which affects speed and durability. You give up the shock resistance and extreme temperature tolerance of the Fortress SSD. The D10 also lacks hardware encryption, so data security depends on your host system. This drive is for gamers who need large, affordable storage for game libraries and do not require the rugged, encrypted security features of the Apricorn drive. It is a consumer-focused storage solution rather than a secure enterprise device.

MDD 8TB NAS Hard Drive

The MDD 8TB NAS drive is an internal 3.5-inch hard drive optimized for network-attached storage. It features a 7200 RPM rotational speed and 256MB cache, providing faster data access than many standard NAS drives. You give up the external enclosure and built-in encryption of the Fortress. This drive is for users building custom NAS systems who need high performance and raw capacity. It does not offer any security features like hardware encryption or tamper resistance. You must implement security at the network or software level. This is a component for storage arrays, not a standalone secure portable drive for sensitive data transport or extreme environment use.

HGST Ultrastar He8 8TB 7200 RPM Hard Drive

The HGST Ultrastar He8 is an internal 3.5-inch helium-filled hard drive with 128MB cache. It is designed for high-capacity NAS and server environments. You give up the external form factor, SSD speed, and hardware encryption of the Fortress. The He8 offers robust reliability for continuous operation in data centers. It is a solid choice for users who need high-density storage for server racks and do not require portability. This drive lacks any built-in security features, so you must manage encryption separately. It is best for IT professionals building storage infrastructure who prioritize capacity and endurance over the rugged, encrypted nature of the Apricorn external SSD.

Seagate IronWolf 8TB 7200 RPM NAS Drive

The Seagate IronWolf 8TB is an internal 3.5-inch NAS drive with 7200 RPM speed and 256MB cache. It includes vibration sensors to maintain performance in multi-drive enclosures. You give up the external USB connectivity and hardware encryption of the Fortress. This drive is for users who need reliable, high-performance storage for their NAS systems. It does not protect data on its own. You must rely on your NAS software for encryption and security. The IronWolf is optimized for 24/7 operation in network storage environments. It is a good alternative if you already have a secure NAS setup and need to add high-capacity, fast internal drives rather than using a single encrypted external unit.
