6 Best Alternatives to the Seagate Skyhawk ST4000VX013 4 TB (2026)

How each alternative compares

Western Digital AV-GP 1TB 3.5-Inch Hard Drive

The Western Digital AV-GP 1TB offers a smaller 1 TB capacity and a 64 MB cache, which is significantly less than the 256 MB buffer in the Skyhawk. It retains the 3.5-inch form factor and SATA interface for easy installation. This drive is designed for single-camera surveillance or basic home NAS systems. You get a lower-cost entry point if your storage needs are minimal. However, the reduced cache and capacity mean it handles fewer simultaneous video streams. It is a practical choice for light loads but lacks the endurance and volume of the 4 TB Skyhawk for larger security setups.

Toshiba 14TB Enterprise 7200 RPM HDD (Renewed)

The Toshiba 14TB Enterprise HDD provides 14 TB of storage, which is much higher than the 4 TB Skyhawk. It features a 7200 RPM rotational speed and a 256 MB cache, matching the Skyhawk's buffer but offering faster data access. This drive is built for high-capacity server storage and demanding environments. You gain significant volume and performance, making it suitable for heavy workloads. The trade-off is a larger physical footprint and higher power consumption. It is ideal for users who prioritize volume and speed over the specialized video optimization of the Skyhawk, fitting well in compact 3.5-inch bays for enterprise use.

Western Digital RE 4TB 7200 RPM Hard Drive

The Western Digital RE 4TB matches the Skyhawk in storage capacity at 4 TB but differs in performance specs. It offers a 7200 RPM rotational speed, which is faster than typical surveillance drives, and a 64 MB cache. This drive is designed for business-critical applications needing high RPM consistency. You get reliable performance for systems where 4 TB is sufficient and speed is key. The smaller cache compared to the Skyhawk's 256 MB may affect sustained write performance. It is a solid choice for users prioritizing rotational speed and cache size over raw capacity, fitting well in enterprise systems requiring consistent performance.

Seagate Exos 7E8 6TB Enterprise Drive

The Seagate Exos 7E8 6TB Enterprise Drive offers 6 TB of storage, which is 50% more than the 4 TB Skyhawk. It features a 256 MB cache, matching the Skyhawk's buffer size, and uses the standard SATA interface. This drive is built for heavy workload NAS and server storage, providing enterprise-grade endurance for 24/7 environments. You gain extra capacity and robust reliability for business-centric systems. The trade-off is a focus on general enterprise performance rather than video-specific optimization. It is ideal for users needing more volume than the Skyhawk offers while maintaining similar cache performance for heavy data access.

Seagate Exos X14 14TB Renewed Enterprise HDD

The Seagate Exos X14 14TB Renewed Enterprise HDD provides 14 TB of capacity, far exceeding the 4 TB Skyhawk. It operates at 7200 RPM, offering higher speed than the standard surveillance drive. This drive is designed for high-capacity enterprise storage needs, prioritizing volume and performance. You get significant storage space and robust performance for demanding environments. The renewed status may affect warranty coverage compared to new units. It suits users who need large volume and speed over specialized video features. The 3.5-inch form factor ensures compatibility, making it a strong alternative for those needing more space than the Skyhawk provides.
