Western Digital WD 4TB My Passport Alternatives: 6 Similar Picks Compared

Alternatives compared by specs

Avolusion 4TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive

The Avolusion 4TB USB 3.0 drive shares the 4TB capacity and USB 3.0 interface of the WD My Passport. It differs in physical form, measuring 7 by 5 inches and weighing 3 pounds, which makes it significantly larger and heavier than the slim, 7.4-ounce portable WD unit. This size suggests a desktop orientation rather than portability. Like the WD drive, it supports Mac compatibility. You choose this option if you prioritize a warranty and basic storage over the compact, pocket-friendly design of the Western Digital drive. It lacks the password protection and ransomware defense features included with the WD model, making it a simpler, less secure choice for mobile users.

Seagate Backup Plus Portable 4TB External Drive

The Seagate Backup Plus Portable 4TB matches the WD drive in capacity but uses a standard USB 3.0 interface instead of the USB-C connectivity found on the My Passport for Mac. It weighs 8.64 ounces and measures 4.51 by 3.07 inches, which is slightly bulkier than the WD’s 2.95-inch width. Unlike the WD drive, which is optimized for Mac, this Seagate model supports both PC and Mac systems out of the box. You might prefer this drive if you need cross-platform flexibility without reformatting. However, you give up the specific Mac-ready design and the included defense against ransomware software that comes with the Western Digital option. It offers a more universal connectivity solution for mixed-device environments.

Silicon Power 4TB Armor A60 Rugged External Drive

The Silicon Power Armor A60 4TB shares the 4TB capacity and USB 3.0 interface with the WD My Passport. Its key difference is the rugged build, designed for outdoor durability rather than sleek portability. It weighs 9.88 ounces and measures 5.5 by 3.4 inches, making it larger and heavier than the slim WD drive. Like the WD model, it supports both PC and Mac systems. You should pick this drive if physical protection is your priority over the compact, stylish design of the Western Digital unit. It lacks the password protection and ransomware defense features of the WD drive, focusing instead on physical resilience. This makes it a practical choice for users who need to safeguard their drive from drops or rough handling during travel.

Seagate Backup Plus Hub 4TB Desktop Hard Drive

The Seagate Backup Plus Hub 4TB Desktop drive offers 4TB capacity but is a desktop unit, not a portable one. It weighs 2.34 pounds and measures 7.8 by 4.65 inches, requiring a stationary setup unlike the compact WD My Passport. It features USB 3.0 and supports both PC and Mac systems. The main advantage is its hub functionality, providing extra USB ports for other devices, which the portable WD drive does not offer. You should choose this if you need stationary storage with added connectivity. You give up portability and the specific Mac-optimized design of the WD drive. It is not designed for travel, making it a poor alternative if you need to carry your drive in a bag.

Western Digital Elements 4TB Portable External Hard Drive

The WD Elements 4TB Portable drive matches the 4TB capacity and USB 3.0 interface of the My Passport for Mac. It weighs 8.32 ounces and measures 4.4 by 3.2 inches, which is slightly larger and heavier than the My Passport. Like the My Passport, it supports both PC and Mac systems. The primary difference is the lack of password protection and ransomware defense software. You might pick this drive if you want a straightforward, no-frills storage solution from Western Digital. It offers similar portability and capacity but sacrifices the security features that make the My Passport for Mac suitable for users who need to protect sensitive data. It is a practical choice for basic storage needs without advanced security requirements.

Seagate Backup Plus Portable 4TB External Drive

The Seagate Backup Plus Portable 4TB Red matches the 4TB capacity and USB 3.0 interface of the WD My Passport. It weighs 9.28 ounces and measures 4.54 by 3.15 inches, making it slightly bulkier than the slim WD drive. Like the WD model, it supports both PC and Mac systems. The key difference is the inclusion of creative software perks and a distinct red color scheme. You might choose this drive if you value aesthetic design and included software tools over the specific Mac-optimized features of the WD drive. It lacks the password protection and ransomware defense found in the WD My Passport. This makes it a good option for users who prioritize style and additional software utilities over enhanced security features.
