Looking Beyond the Western Digital Ultrastar 18TB CMR HDD? 6 Alternatives Worth a Look

Comparing Key Alternatives to the WD HC550

Toshiba 14TB Enterprise 7200 RPM HDD (Renewed)

The Toshiba 14TB Enterprise HDD reduces capacity by 4TB compared to the 18TB Western Digital Ultrastar. It retains the 7200 RPM rotational speed but uses a smaller 256MB cache instead of the Ultrastar’s 512MB buffer. This drive also features helium sealing, similar to the WD model, which helps lower power draw in high-density arrays. You might choose this option if you prioritize proven helium technology and slightly lower cost over maximum raw storage. The reduced cache size may impact write performance in heavy enterprise workloads where large data bursts are common. It remains a strong choice for storage arrays that do not require the full 18TB footprint.

Western Digital RE 4TB 7200 RPM Hard Drive

The Western Digital RE 4TB drive offers significantly less storage than the 18TB Ultrastar, providing only 4TB. It shares the same 7200 RPM speed and SATA interface but drops the cache to just 64MB. This model is designed for systems with limited drive bays where reliability and speed matter more than high capacity. You should pick this drive if you need compact, high-performance storage for critical applications rather than bulk data archiving. The smaller form factor and lower cache make it less suitable for heavy continuous write tasks. It fits best in environments where you can install more drives to achieve total capacity, leveraging the speed of each individual unit.

Seagate Exos X14 14TB Renewed Enterprise HDD

The Seagate Exos X14 14TB drive provides 4TB less capacity than the WD Ultrastar but maintains the 7200 RPM spindle speed. It lacks the specific cache size data in the provided specs, but it is built for active server environments needing high speed. This drive is a good alternative if you prioritize Seagate’s enterprise reliability and recertified value over the highest possible capacity. It fits well in dense arrays where vibration control and consistent performance are key. You might choose this over the 18TB model if your workload benefits from Seagate’s specific engineering or if you find better availability in the 14TB tier. It offers a solid balance of speed and density for active data centers.

MFerraz 6TB Enterprise 7200 RPM Hard Drive

The MFerraz 6TB Enterprise drive offers much lower capacity than the 18TB Ultrastar, providing only 6TB. It matches the 7200 RPM speed and includes a 256MB cache, which is half the size of the WD model’s buffer. This drive is ideal for smaller enterprise setups where 6TB is sufficient and you want to save space or power. You should consider this option if you are building a scalable array with many drives rather than relying on a few high-capacity units. The reduced cache may affect performance during large file transfers. It is a practical choice for users who need reliable, high-speed storage for specific applications without the overhead of 18TB capacity.

Seagate Exos X16 14TB Renewed Hard Drive

The Seagate Exos X16 14TB drive provides 4TB less storage than the WD Ultrastar but shares the 7200 RPM speed and SATA interface. It includes a 256MB cache, which is smaller than the Ultrastar’s 512MB buffer. This model is suited for enterprise users who prioritize speed and warranty coverage over maximum capacity. You might pick this drive if you need a recertified option with strong performance for data centers or heavy workloads. The reduced capacity allows for more drives in the same space, potentially improving redundancy. It is a solid choice for those who value Seagate’s enterprise features and reliable performance in a slightly smaller package.

HGST Ultrastar He10 10TB Enterprise Hard Drive

The HGST Ultrastar He10 10TB drive offers 8TB less capacity than the WD Ultrastar but maintains the 7200 RPM speed and 256MB cache. It uses helium cooling, similar to the WD model, which helps with reliability and vibration control in dense arrays. You should choose this drive if you prioritize stability and proven helium technology over the highest possible single-drive capacity. It fits well in environments where vibration control is critical and you can use more drives to achieve total storage. The smaller cache may impact performance in heavy write tasks. It is a practical option for users who need reliable, helium-cooled storage for enterprise applications without the need for 18TB per drive.
